I can definitely relate to that, as far as weight loss goes.

Having piled on a good 30lb of excess fat, I wasn't happy with my appearance or comfortable in the kind of clothes I like wearing. I bit the bullet earlier this year and started a walk-jog programme. The exertion was almost impossible at first, only just manageable. By about session 3 the jogging parts weren't killing me any more, and rising to the challenge began to be fun in its own right. My clothes started to fit better, then they got looser.
So the results are right there in the mirror. On the scales, too, but they're more variable.

Each little sign of progress gives me another burst of motivation. Some weeks I have to ease off the exercise to let a sore ankle recover. But my weight seems to keep moving in the right direction, like the research says, and I am starting to see myself as someone who cares about health and fitness (not just how I look).

When it comes to stopping drinking, the first habit I need to get into is "saying no" :-)
I expect it will be like the running - hellish at first! But easier and more adept with practice.

Thanks Ashley. My goal is to abstain from now on. When I'm drinking I can't seem to set a limit.
I'm really tired of the consequences now and my attitude today is "enough is enough".

Hi Sam,

Thanks, and you are not alone! I found Fridays and Saturdays very tough as I felt entitled to unwind at the weekend, and tended to overindulge. With the best of intentions about sticking to a limit, but more often than not my brain flipped into 'just one more' mode and I ended up regretting it the next day.

Hope you hang in there and get back on track - Sian

Your guide to quitting or cutting down? Ask a Friend

This reminds me, as I'm aiming to abstain all over Christmas I need to 'mention' it in advance somehow to my family who'll be around. Otherwise it will come as a shock to some! I'd rather not make a big deal of it, hope there won't be too many questions to field.

How do I manage triggers when being at home is where I drink

Hi everyone,

I can't often think of anything to post but want to share how things have gone for me since I started abstaining completely. It's been six weeks now, and my drinking was mainly at home before that. The first 3 weekends I really had to watch myself like a hawk as temptation often crossed my mind. Needed to be extra vigilant over those thoughts and not relax my guard at all, or I might have 'accidentally' bought alcohol or 'forgot' I was supposed to be abstaining.

Things that helped me at home were trying all kinds of exotic teas, cooking new recipes, pampering myself with hot baths, scented candles and body lotions, taking more naps than usual, reading these forums and other recovery websites, updating my diary now and again, and constantly reminding myself of the self-loathing I felt when I decided to quit, and how just one drink would land me straight back there.

AA meetings have helped me enormously and so have your messages on here, in many a dicey moment. This will be my seventh weekend sober and I can honestly say the emotional turmoil is calming down and the issue of whether or not to drink is gradually taking more of a back seat. I couldn't do this on my own - thanks to you all for being there.

Wishing everyone bon courage for the weekend!

Paying attention to the Positives

That's so good to read, Dena, especially what a different experience it is this time around.
Applause from me too for picking up your coin!

need some health tips

Hi Junebug,  I got into this way of thinking last year and made some changes gradually, the first was to start the day with a healthy breakfast of slow-release carbs (e.g. muesli or wholegrain toast). It's become a good habit now and I wouldn't say I totally eat regular meals but I never skip breakfast any more and energy levels are much improved. What is your eating like at the moment, do you eat regular meals, graze through the day or pretty much leave it to chance?

Diary Results

Junebug, you're still young! And you're turning your life in a new direction now - stringing these days together is an accomplishment, for a start. But also, a pretty big deal for your mind and body to adjust to (like reality, come to that!) so be kind to yourself. Just keep doing whatever it takes to resist the craving, we're all here for you.

Hi Better Inspiration and welcome to the forum, what a great user name.
Sounds like you want a different balance in your life, I can certainly relate to that!
Have you ever tried taking a break from drinking?
