I can definitely relate to that, as far as weight loss goes.
Having piled on a good 30lb of excess fat, I wasn't happy with my appearance or comfortable in the kind of clothes I like wearing. I bit the bullet earlier this year and started a walk-jog programme. The exertion was almost impossible at first, only just manageable. By about session 3 the jogging parts weren't killing me any more, and rising to the challenge began to be fun in its own right. My clothes started to fit better, then they got looser.
So the results are right there in the mirror. On the scales, too, but they're more variable.
Each little sign of progress gives me another burst of motivation. Some weeks I have to ease off the exercise to let a sore ankle recover. But my weight seems to keep moving in the right direction, like the research says, and I am starting to see myself as someone who cares about health and fitness (not just how I look).
When it comes to stopping drinking, the first habit I need to get into is "saying no" :-)
I expect it will be like the running - hellish at first! But easier and more adept with practice.
