Hello

Hello to everyone.

I am new to the group, obviously or I wouldn't be introducing myself.  I have been suffering for about 15 months now and I am looking for information, support and anything else I can find.  Hopefully I can offer some of the same back.

Group Discussion on Session 1

I am just starting the first session also and yes lots of reading, but not so bad.   I find that I used to be an avid reader, but no longer can as I can read the same page 3 times and not absorb any of what I have read, it is kind of frustrating.

Anyway I am having issues with the rating scale also, I find it very difficult as I always do compare myself to everyone else and as much as I try not to, I still do.   I think about all I have and all that is good in my life and then have a hard time saying that my depression is at an 80 or 90 or even 100 no matter what I am feeling.

Group Discussion on Session 1

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I really like the idea that you use for assessing yourself and I think you are right, using 59 instead of 60 would seem silly and then I would be stressing about whether I felt I was a 59 or 63.  Increments of 10 seem much better.

I am surprised that I did not have an issue reading a lot of the actual materials and hopefully I do retain some of it.  I don't think I can shut off all noise, maybe as I get a bit further, but right now if I don't have lots of distractions my brain turns into "negativity mode" and I find myself in tears, but thank you both for the information.

Missed Meds

Hi Everyone.

I find that a daily pill container beside my computer (where I usually go first thing everyday) and then I am always reminded to take them and also since they are separated by day I know if I miss any days also.  Usually if I do miss a day I know within a few hours though as I get a brutal migraines.  I am always worried about taking it late though that I am taking them too close together and that can be bad, should probably ask the pharmacist about that.

I think for the police issue I would make sure that I had a separate compartment for them in my purse with nothing else in it.   I can't imagine anything worse then being arrested for following doctor's orders, lol.

People finding out

Hi All,

I feel the same way about keeping things under wraps, I am so surprised how uneducated people are about mental illness, myself being one of them, before it happened to me.

I finally decided that I was going to tell my mother about what was going on with me as we were driving to the mall.  We drove past a hospital here that had just recently finished the new mental health wing and I thought it was the perfect opening.   My mother said how quickly they had completed it and I said yes it looks like they did a great job on the new mental health wing.  She then said yes and it is huge, who knew we had so many nut cases in Calgary.   I was kind of devastated and decided it was probably not a good time to talk.   Now this is my own mother, how could I even tell others without a long explanation that I really don't have the energy for.

My thoughts,

Stacy

The Depression Centre is now offering Group Program Walkthroughs!

Hello to everyone, again.  I am a new member and yes I would be more than willing and happy to commit to being a part of the group walk through.

I am very dedicated to finding answers and something of my former self again and would hope that through sharing of my experiences be able to help others in their journey.

My expectations would be that I like to see honesty, openness and a good commitment from all participating so that we can make the most of the sessions.  I like feedback and believe everyone is entitled to their opinion even if at times it is different than mine, but hearing others always allows us to see something different, especially when I find at times right now I am walking with blinders on.

Positive Thinking

Hi Jason,

I am kind of torn about the powers of positive thinking.   I literally have spent my entire life I guess you could say, ignoring negative emotion.   I felt tears were a waste of time, if you could do something about a situation you did and if you couldn't you let it go.   No matter what adversity I had been faced with I looked at the bright side of the situation. With this technique for dealing with life I managed to make it through a lot of bad stuff, well at least until recently (April 2009) when I was diagnosed with depression.

I have watched most of The Secret and honestly felt it quite ridiculous, I don't believe that if you think and imagine yourself dating several people or getting married that these things will suddenly fall into your lap.

I dunno I guess I am rambling, but what I am attempting to say is if you are a positive person you will be more likely to project that to others and they will respond positively, but at the same time sometimes bad things happen and you have to deal with it properly and let emotion run its normal course or it can have a negative impact on your self.

Summer time fun!

Hi Ashley,

Something that I started new this year was gardening.   I don't have much of a yard, but did manage to plant a few things and it has been very positive for me.   When my kids tell me how cool it is to get fresh lettuce or onions out of our garden or just sitting out in the sun doing some weeding.  It is a great feeling having my family eating something I have grown, it is wonderful getting outside and it is also peaceful.

I am glad to have decided to try this, I don't have a real green thumb for sure, but it definitely isn't black either.  I am already planning some perennials for the fall to fill in the flower garden a bit more as it was kind of sparse this year and have purchased a little indoor greenhouse so I can get a jump on some of my vegetables for next year.

Support

Hi Ashley,

I am relatively new, but I really do like the "steps"of the program.   It really helps me keep focused without having to think to hard if that makes any sense.   I find a lot of the times right now I am all over the place, but it is nice to have something in a logical order to work through.

Thanks,

Stacy
