Congrats Eva. That's one of my fears being in that situation but reading ur comments are giving me confidence that I'll be able to handle that situation one day.

Way to go Eva!  I'm sure it'll get easier each time.  You've displayed you have the strength to abstain while faced with a very strong trigger...keep up the good work.

Well done Eva, the first time is always the most difficult.  It will be easier the next time.

Good to see who is in charge of you.

Real progress.  What is your next step.

Hi Dave

Thank you for your encouragement, I really do appreciate your comments.

I began this journey by ticking off every alcohol free day, then alcohol free days in a row and now I am focussing on ticking off weeks abstaining. I am looking forward to when I can tick off months and then years and say with conviction "I can't imagine going back to that( my former) life style."

To the others who have begun their journey - we can do this!

Hi Eva,

Congratulations on that breakthrough! That is fantastic that you realize that now. I found when I quit it I realized very quickly I was the one putting pressure on myself. It's been a while now since I quit and it's very easy to go out or get together and not feel any pressure at drink. In fact, I enjoy going out so much more now not drinking. I didn't realize before how much energy I was spending planning and then recovering for a few hours of convoluted fun. Now I can't imagine going back to that life style. Awesome job!

Squashed, congratulations on making it through the first week. That's an important milestone. Great work!

You too TS (toxicsoul)!

All the best,

Dave

I really feel like dancing for the last few months and went to look on the internet for dancing places for recovered alcoholics and find a few places where you can dance and there is no alcohol. I don't think I am ready to go in a full alcohol serving place but GOOD FOR YOU. I think it is a HUGE step when you can do this. Congratulations!!!

Great work Eva!

We would normally warn people against being in a high trigger situation like you were early in a quit so I am amazed with how in control you felt. It's great to hear how confident you feel in this quit.

How can you hold on to this feeling when you have an urge or craving again?

That is just fabulous Eva! Makes you wonder why the need to drink to have a good time came about in the first place. Now that  you've proven to yourself it can be done each subsequent engagement should be even easier. Kudos to you and keep up the good fight.
Social situations are definitely a tough one. I recently went to a gathering where I chose to abstain. One particular individual insisted that I could have just one whereby I told her that no, I couldn't have just one. I said if I have one I'll need another and another.
Squashed, I'm also on day 7 of no alcohol (wine). I would like to join you both if I may, on this quest for good health and for me, a complete severance of my relationship with alcohol.

Congratulations Eva!

It's great that you abstained from alcohol and " thoroughly enjoyed being in control" while out socialising. This certainly is a huge breakthrough and I can sense your satisfaction in achieving it. Did you set a goal before venturing out?

I am now day 7 straight with out wine. I have managed to moderate my alcohol consumption since Dec 1 and now I believe that I can live my life without it.

So I am with you on the "dry" January journey if you don't mind me joining you.

Onwards and upwards!

So after 10 years of being unable to imagine setting foot inside a bar and not drinking, tonight I went out and sat with friends in a bar for hours and didn't drink a drop of alcohol! I was always so convinced I would feel incredibly awkward but I thoroughly enjoyed being in control of my actions and also watching others behave!(which was hilarious at times!)
I can't believe it! For anybody who, like I did for years, thinks they cannot have a good time/relax without alcohol you can!
I am so looking forward to waking up tomorrow remembering everything and without a fuzzy head. This is a huge personal breakthrough for me. And nobody put pressure on me to drink as I imagined they would! They actually congratulated me on not drinking. So I'm going to try to stay off alcohol until January(I haven't had a drop since the 31st Dec) and possibly longer!
