Quitting tomorrow

5 years ago 0 175 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
My excitement was short lived. I went away for a couple of days and wasnt able to maintain my quit. Im so disappointed and angry at my self. Ive established that travel is too hard to do in these early stages . I try again starting tomorrow this time with nothing to hamper my schedule. Arrrggghhh frustration!!

Wowza, Day 6!!!!  What a great thing to read when I signed on here!  I totally relate to the quit feeling "messy."  I remember how undisciplined and kinda dirty it felt when I was jamming candies and endless numbers of Scotch mints in my mouth during quit attempts.  I felt gross. I would tell myself ridiculous and untrue things like, "At least a smoke is neat and tidy, one and done" ...... ummm, could I have been any more delusional???? The truth of it is that, even though it feels uncomfortable to re-calibrate during a quit, it is a finite period of our lives and not a big disastrous unravelling like it feels like sometimes.  It's just a brief stint of feeling unbalanced or unchecked.  Smoking, on the other hand, is a lifetime of ACTUAL, unfixable disaster.  In the end, I gave myself total permission to do whatever I needed to do to ride out the quit.  I remember laughing one day when I read a poster here describe the way he "destroyed his kitchen" in the throes of a rough night of nicotine withdrawal.  I mean, whatever, right?  A few weeks of feeling a little out of control around food, or whatever it is, is worth the pay-off of never having to quit smoking again.

P.S - I drink COPIOUS amounts of tea, and tea has basically become my little ritual much like smoking was.  I make a cup when I finish a task, when I need a break from work, when I'm bored, when I'm sleepy, when I'm happy, when I want comfort, on long drives, etc. All the times I used to use cigarettes, I find tea works just as well for me now, and I'm much happier, healthier, and less stinky for it.  Maybe you could find a ritual you like?  I like a hot drink because it's warm, it's portable, it goes in my mouth (haha), it takes a certain amount of time to prepare and enjoy, it uses my hands and I can reach for it over and over again, etc.  Everything smokes did. But I look cuter with a mug of  tea than I ever did with a cigarette lol.

Day 6
Yesterday was hard. I felt like smoking all day so l kept eating and using my spray and putting lollies in my mouth. It feels like l constantly have to consume something (often junk) to deal with the cravings. This feels messy and like lm being too dependant on food and spray. I dont want to replace my addiction with junk food. Im going to try to have a cleaner day today.

I saw someone post the things they hate about smoking and l thought what a great idea. Im going to add mine here for reference.
I hate smoking because....
*lt steals my sense of freedom
*lt controls me and my life
* l let down my loved ones
*Destroys my health
*Always having to depend on something external to feel good
*Not being able to cope with life naturally
*Knowing l have a dirty unhealthy addiction
*My breathing is unregulated and difficult
*My sinuses are all blocked up
*So much money wasted
* Makes my skin look yellow (even my face)
*Looking at the clock to justify having my next cigarette (someone else said this and its sooo true)
*Having to go outside in extreme heat or cold
*Its so pathetic looking to non smokers
* lts unrighteous (the bible says touch no unclean thing and treat your body like a temple of the spirit)
* Addiction has controlled me for too long. I want to be addiction-free
*Stinking of stale smoke to non smokers
*Always wanting/thinking about/trying to quit and being unable to
* Not being able to go anywhere without bringing smokes with me
* Always thinking about my next fag
* Having to go through the quitting process

Day 5
I made a mistake. Yesterday was only day 4 so lm on the morning of day 5 now. Time is really dragging. I think l better stop counting it. The mornings are particularly hard. Im missing my morning ritual. I still have my coffee outside minus the smoke.  Its somewhat comforting to still enjoy the coffee outside. I still go outside during the day for small breaks. It tricks my mind into believing its still getting a treat. Im missing the treat part of the treat (the cigarette) but lm hoping time will help. I just have to stop day counting.

Day 5
I didnt even think ld make it this far. Im so grateful l have. The days are dragging a bit and l keep thinking "Its time for a cigarette" then l remember l dont have them anymore and its a bit of a sinking feeling. Id love to puff on one right now, l think it would be so enjoyable but l have to try not to indulge in thoughts like that. Im using my nicotine spray a fair bit (as often as l woukd smoke) and it helps with the cravings but lm dependant on it now. Its not ideal. I wish l could cold turkey it but l need a crutch right now. Overall this quit is not as hard as theyve been in the past but lm definitely not counting chickens because it cld get harder any day.  Im avoiding going out because it feels more difficult when l do and lm trying to avoid stress. Im worried that when l get hit with something stressful l will bust. So far so good but lm just nervous that this is too good to be true.

Thanks Tim...you and Stella are both an inspiration and its kind of you to reply to all the newcomers here because you need support in the beginning and it can be a bit quiet around here (apart from the newbies most of whom disappear)

Hi Sparrow,
Bravo!!! Like Stella, I was hoping to see you back on your quit journey one day.  I have my fingers crossed for you this time too. Day 4 already.... hope you are doing fine so far. Keep your eye on the end of that tunnel. The light will be getting brighter each day on your path to freedom.  Wish you the best!
Stay strong.

Thanks so much Stella. Support is everything . I know its such early days (day 3) but l have a better feeling about this one and this is the longest l havent smoked in many many yrs. Actually l did something l shouldnt have . I saw someone smoking at the shops and asked them for a cigarette. I brought it home, made a cuppa and went outside for the ritual. I was expecting to love it but it turned out to be a real anti-climax. Im not disappointed l did it because it showed me that l dont actually enjoy smoking as much as l thought l did. I realised for me its the habit l enjoy and the answer to stress, boredom, celebration. I punctuate all my activities with smoking and thats what lm missing...the ritual. Im so glad l didnt love it that much. Armed with this info makes it easier for me.
Stella so happy for you on 8 months....so awesome! Your quit length makes me realise how much time lve wasted as l came to this forum at your 1 month mark and because l didnt change my quit date my quit meter showed thousands of cigarettes that l had smoked (rather then hadnt). Yuk! Im so disgusted with this habit. Seeing some light in the tunnel

Yay Sparrow!! I was hoping I would see a post like this from you sometime.  It sounds like you're in the right head space for a quit. I used a lot of the same language and tactics you wrote about when I was starting my quit, and they really worked for me.  I hope you post a lot.  You followed my quit, and I would love love love to follow yours :D
