Well done folks, keep up the work, you are doing this. Those urges you are feeling are just the nicotine monster's death throes as it dies!!!! I was a heavy smoker for 30 years and perviously could only stop for 3/4 days. . It will feel a bit tough at times during Hell week but believe me, it does get easier, and within a few weeks you will have that moment of revalation when you are in a situation that would normally reach for a smoke, and it doesn't cross your mind. Keep jumping in and posting, everyone here has been where you, we are all here to help.

You guys can do this!   I'm living proof that it can happen.   Mine was also from a medical scare.   Only I wasn't able to breathe from bronchitis and I panicked when I couldn't get a breath in.   My neighbor took me to the hospital ER they got it straightened out for me.   But they told me that this smoking couldn't continue or I wouldn't make it.   I was so nicotine dependent I sent my husband home for some Nicorette gum while I was in the ER room.   Now THAT'S bad.   But my medical emergency was enough to scare some sense into me.  And the cigarettes I had first smoked that day before I went into the hospital ER were my last.  That was over 3 1/2 yrs ago.   I know the urge to relapse is strong and I still feel it at times,  but so far I've resisted it.  Hopefully you all will too.   Best of luck.   Hang in there!

Scott, welcome to the SSC and congratulations on 4 smoke free days.  Thank you for sharing your experiences with smoking and with quitting.  The great thing about this site is that nobody preaches since we've all gone through withdrawals and fighting the addiction!  Sorry to hear that you had a medical scare.  I had a medical scare in April 2008.  It took me until August 2008 to make the decision to quit, and I've not had a cigarette since.  Maybe you and BGH should be online quit buddies since you both quit on the same day and you both can help each other fight cravings and temptations.  Enjoy your cup of decaf tea, and keep saying N.O.P.E. while enjoy your smoke free success!  P.S.  Both of you should set up your quit meters and add your meters to your posts.  You can do this under "my profile".  Then you can see your daily success!

Bghclean, I'm on day 4 too. I quit on September 1 at 1130 in the morning. Good luck and stay strong to you and me both.
This is my fourth time to quit in about 30 total years of smoking. The  times I quit I stayed smoke free for three years, two and a half years, 5 months, and once for 3 weeks. The last time was in 2007 and it was for 5 months. I started back due to lots of family stress in my life at the time.

This time I'm quitting because of a scary heart attack experience where I seriously felt I had about 5 seconds left to live on this earth. I was rushed to the hospital, underwent a bunch of tests, and was eventually told it wasn't a heart attack, but that they don't know what it was. I still have to have more tests before they figure it all out.

Anyway, having quit in the past, I know what to expect from my body in it's withdrawals from nicotine, pure heck for a few weeks. After that it's those 'high stress' slipups I have to be on the look out for. I have to keep telling myself that just one cigarette never works out. Everytime I went back to smoking I thought I could smoke just a cig or two and that would be it. I've realized there is no situation where I can smoke just a little bit and then stop again.

Whew, the withdrawals can be pretty tough. I just went through a pretty bad craving. Thinking of sitting outside smoking one cigarette after another until the pack is gone. But then after that I have to deal with smoking again, and I don't want to do that. I don't want to be nervous for a cigarette the rest of my life. Instead I'll make a cup a decaf tea and count again how many hours I haven't smoked a cigarette.

BGH, just remember that this temporary inconvenience will yield a huge permanent improvement.  Are you rewarding yourself?  Drinking lots of iced water?  Changing your routine?  Cleaning your house and car to get rid of the smoke smell?  Doing laundry to get rid of the smoke smell?  Taking care of YOU?  Exercising?  Taking a walk to smell the roses?  Getting as much rest as possible?  Remembering why you wanted to quit in the first place?  Anticipating all the wonderful benefits that quitting will bring to your life?

As Lainey said, your body is healing.  Remember to say N.O.P.E. (not one puff ever) each and every day.  Trust me, this will get better!  Hell Week really is truth in advertising!  You can do this!  Post as often as you need, if only to rant and rave!  Congratulations on 4 smoke free days!  We're all rooting for your continued success!

Hey bghclean! You're at the right place! You're not crazy, just a great quitter! We have all been through it. Let the tears come as they may, they are cleansing. Yell, scream, stomp if you want, just don't smoke. Try a tall glass of cold water, it helps alot. Make sure you have some candy or gum, something on hand to keep your mouth and hands occupied. You will feel sleepy or light headed too, for the first while, it is all normal, you are healing your body. Deep breathing also helps.
You are through the worst of it now and each day will get a bit better. Hang in there. Watch a good movie and go to bed early, tomorrow will be better! Keep yourself as positive as you can and you'll soon be at 100 days!
Not One Puff Ever!
