Banana, Perfect sense! You've associated smoking with other things such as driving your car, going out... You can help break these associations by changing your routine slightly. Ex: When you get into the car, instead of lighting a cigarette, you now turn on the radio to your favorite station and pop in a piece of gum. May seem a little strange at first but the more you do it, the more it becomes second nature and the your associations become a thing of the past. Hope this helps. Thank you all so much for the support. I really appreciate it & I applaud all of you on your quits too. Luna, that is one fine lookin' quit meter you have! Bear you are right about not remembering what it's like without the smokes. They pretty much controlled my life & it's probably going to take me a while to get the feeling of control back. I always feel like I am forgetting something when I get into my car. What I forgot was to put a cigarette in my mouth & light it....crazy! Like driving depends on a burning cigarette. Am I making sense? Allison, you are so right too. It feels right now & that's all that matters. How did you all get so smart? Thanx again. 18 Days strong :)

Banana, Congratulations! You are doing so great! The weight gain is temporary and a little increase in physical activity will take care of that. Keep up the great progress! Danielle _______________________ The SSC Support Team

Wow, I had to go back quite a few pages to find this thread. I originally posted it on Feb. 2nd & am happy to report that on April 2nd I did it :) My employer offered any staff who wanted it, the full replacement cost of any type of stop smoking treatment & I opted to use the patch. I was going to get the patches anyways but when the hospital said they wanted to pay for it....well, I wasn't going to argue & I let them pay ;p I had my last cigarette April 1st (no foolin') & I honestly did not enjoy it. Other than some crazy dreams, I have had no ill effects & the best part it is, I feel great & don't want a cigarette. I found myself only once, reach for cigarettes that weren't there & it made me laugh. Had to remind myself, "Oh yeah, I don't smoke anymore." I am not concerned about my diet because as a family, we eat very healthy. I am more concerned about the portions that I find myself eating & I am also ready to dust off the treadmill & actually start using it. I am expecting some weight gain but that's ok because I am thrilled that I haven't had a cigarette in 17 days & I haven't killed anyone because of it LOL Seriously though, I am surprised that it's going this well. I had to pass along the good news :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/2/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 16 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 420 Amount Saved: $129.76 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 18 Mins: 43 Seconds: 47

Hi everybody, right now I'm shaking in my boots & close to tears. I am a long time smoker(30 years), who for the longest time has thought about quitting. I know that I need to quit & I want to....more than anything else, I want to quit but I am so scared. I can cite all the reasons why I need to & from what I've read so far here, it's a lot of the same things that I've told myself....so why can't I do it? It controls me & I hate it! I signed up today & am just beginning with the program. Right now I am on step 2 "Am I ready to quit?".......ummm, yeah ;p I don't want to rush the program though & I am wondering how long (on average), from starting the program to picking the quit date? I should mention that I did quit once before & was happily smoke free for 2 years. I quit (cold turkey) when I got pregnant, which was 17years ago & this may sound odd but it was the easiest thing to do. I did it for my son. I should be able to do it for myself. I tell myself to do it for him again....god knows he wants me to but it's not the same. I also am a cancer survivor. Thyroid cancer was diagnosed 6 years ago....had the surgery, take my meds everyday & have been considered cured for 5 years....but I still smoke :confuse: I would never play with a loaded gun but isn't that in fact, what I am doing? I feel so messed up right now. I know that as I move through this lifestyle change, I am going to need your advice & support.

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement. Last night I was in a really bad place & very emotional. I think the rush of emotion came from finally making a decision. No more sitting on the fence debating whether I should or shouldn't...I should & I will! I am now at step 4-preparing to quit & have started my smoker's diary, which is already making me aware of how much I smoke. The first cigarette of the day I really wanted but so far, the others seem to be out of habit....need to find a replacement habit:) I've noticed also that most of the time, I smoke alone but that could be because it's Saturday morning. I never paid attention to when & why I smoked & I think this tool is a BIG eye opener. Monday morning, I am going to call to make an appointment with my doctor & get his advice. Thank you for suggesting it, I honestly hadn't thought of seeing him. I would like to set a quit date for possibly next weekend. I guess I should wait & see what the Doc says about NRT's. My feeling on them is, I would prefer not to use them but I also want to succeed, so if he thinks that I'll have a better chance, I'll do it. DJ, thank you for the information on the book. Someone else had suggested that book months ago & for the life of me, I couldn't remember the title or the author. Thank you again! I love how almost everyone finished their posts with "You can do it":) & have chosen my sign off will be... I CAN DO THIS!
