Mental illness in the workplace

Members,

The following information is taken from the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Mental illness is the most stigmatized disability in the workplace.  Due to this stigma people with mental illness often face the greatest barriers to employment.  Some of the obstacles they face are: “gaps in work history, limited employment experience, lack of confidence, fear and anxiety, workplace discrimination and inflexibility, social stigma and the rigidity of existing income support/benefit programs.” (CMHA, 2009)

Many people with mental illness find these obstacles too difficult to face.  This can explain the 70-90% unemployment rate amongst people with mental illness.  Being a productive member of the community is a basic human need.  The Mental Health Works is a great new program offered by the Canadian Mental Health Association.  Visit their site at http://www.mentalhealthworks.ca/index.asp.  There is a ton of information for you and your employer.  Let us know what you think and what you have learned!

The above information was taken from:

Canadian Mental Health Association (2009) Employment and Mental Illness.  Retrieved on June 4, 2009, from http://www.cmha.ca/BINS/content_page.asp?cid=3-109

Stress at Work

Members,

In the past week, we’ve been talking about stress management. Contrary to popular belief, stress is not a given when it comes to working. Stress at work often leads to:
  • Decrease commitment
  • Decreased productivity
  • Increase in incidence of mental health illnesses such as anxiety & depression
  • Increased incidence of absenteeism
  • Decreased recruitment & retention
  • Decreased customer satisfaction
From this list, you should conclude that learning how to cope effectively with stress in the workplace can result in a better work environment. It also makes you a better employee. If you encourage others to do the same, a better boss or coworker!

How does stress impact you at work?

Anxiety & Panic Attacks.

Dream,

Have you discussed this with your doctor? He may recommend you go to a sleep clinic to figure out what exactly is going on.

During the day do you feel tired?  Do you exercise during the day? How have you been eating?

Anxiety & Panic Attacks.

Great advice sweatbee!  Love it.

Dreammessanger, Its a good idea to keep exercising.  This will help to expell pent up energy and help you to relax at the end of the day.  Exercise can help a lot with your sleep pattern.

Also, many people as they get older realize they need less sleep then before.  Although most adults function best with 7-8 hours of sleep, some people only need 5-6, some 10-11.  Listen to your body.  If you are not tired do not force yourself to sleep. Let us know how you are doing and what is working or not working for you.

Physical Symptoms

Hi Crystal,

If you have concerns about your medication it is highly recommended to discuss these concerns with your doctor. He/she can change your dosage, give advice or recommend alternatives.

Advice and suggestions are good but when it comes to your medication. Your doctors advice is best.

Let us know what you find out.

More tips in dealing with workplace stress

Members,

In the past week, we’ve been talking about stress management. Contrary to popular belief, stress is not a given when it comes to working. If you are experiencing stress at work and it’s more that you can handle, there are a few things you can d

  • Follow the chain. The first point of contact should always be those involved. If you’re having trouble with a co-worker, talk to them first. Remember your communication skills. If attempts fail, talk to the next person up the tree, your supervisor.
  • EAP: Many organizations now have in place workplace wellness programs. In some workplaces, HR often fills this role also. Often times, referrals for counseling or classes on stress & anger management are available.
  • Your GP or mental health unit is another resource often available to you. Again, often times they can point you in the right direction for further assistance.
  • Your boss can also be helpful to you in your quest for decreasing stress. Often times, employers do not realize what you have on your plate. Sometimes, arrangements can be made to reorganize the load, increase staff or staff available to help you.

Have any members ever tried to decrease their workplace stress? What was your experience?

Anxiety & Panic Attacks.

Members, can anyone offer advice to dreammessenger regarding seeking medical attention?

What have other members done?

Have you tried talking to a pharmacist or looking into other therapies?

Dreammessanger, even if you are tired it is important to try to exercise.  This will help you with sleeping. Even if it is even for a slow short walk.  Anything will help.
