This is my 3rd attempt to quit smoking, but I realized that this is the first time I haven't had to convince myself that if it gets really bad, I might allow myself to have one. This is the first time I've been all right with looking ahead and being a non-smoker, with no panic that I might never light up another cigarette.
I'm using the gum for the first few weeks - less than directed, but it's helping, and I'm excited about quitting! Even on day 2, feeling like crap and extremely "spacey", I'm excited. I don't know - for those of you who've been successful quitters after trying a few times, was there anything significantly different about the quit that finally worked??
Thanks!

That sounds like something you really need to work with your doctor about. Sudden weight gain like that generally is caused by overeating (which you say you're not doing) because of stress or depression, or some kind of health issue. You should speak with your doctor about your concerns and perhaps together you can work out a solution. Quitting smoking on its own does not cause you to gain weight, so it seems like there is something else at work here.

Tryagain-
You are right where I lost my last quit. It's a hard place, but I regret not working my way through it and turning down that offered cigarette. Just keep taking it day by day, and stick with these people...they're quality!

I told myself that:
-I liked it
-I needed to relax
-I needed it to hold an in-depth conversation
-I needed it when I was uncomfortable
-I needed it to be allowed to take a break at work
-I was more addicted than most people, so why bother?
It is all pretty stupid when you look at it like that, isn't it? Compared to why to quit:
-3 family members with various cancers
-starting a teaching job in the fall
-I want to be able to jog on the beach without the cool breathing issues
I don't know. They seem so much more substantial, since I can do all of the above things like relax and take breaks and be more comfortable without cigarettes, and the bottom 3, which are vastly more important to me, are far more difficult to do while I smoke. They really do nothing but hurt. So why do we lie to ourselves like that?

I'm 1/2way throught the day, and I am not all here. I feel like I'm just watching myself from 2 streets away. And I'm really tired. It seems like it's worse this time around than it was before. Anyway, I'm just feeling a bit whiny and wanted to complain a little. Even feeling like I'm the valley girl from hell hasn't brought me even close to smoking, so I guess that's something. :-)

Thanks, guys, for all the support. Day four is much better, and I even forget to take my gum half the time. I think I may do away with it. Spacey-ness is nowehere near where it was 2 days ago, though it's still there.
My quitting buddy gave up her quit after 3 days, though, and that was a bit disheartening. But her quit is not mine - it took me 2 other tries to get here, and she never has before. I'm still sticking though. I woke up this morning and for the first time in a long time my face didn't feel greasy and I could take a deep breath right off. If that doesn't make it worth it right there, I don't know what would.
Thanks again :-)

Sorry to hear, Kayla, but we'll see you back again in a few weeks, right??? Don't give up on the quit completely, even if you feel you have to set it aside for now.
