I quit 9 days ago. I was actually sick with the flu at the time, so I think that may masked some of the withdrawal. I did use the gum a couple of times a day, but that was it. The last few days have been hell. I have chewed so much gum my teeth and gums hurt. HELP. When will this lighten up and why did it take so long to hit.

I am on day 12. Hooray! I feel much better, but the top of my mouth is just tore up. I don't know if it was the gum. I did not chew any yesterday and haven't today, or if it's one of those crazy withdrawal things. Any Ideas?

I'm only at 15 days and I am using the gum. I have tried to cut back because of the mouth irritation, but the cravings seem to get worse. Am I cheating by using the gum and prolonging this obsession? I really feel like I need it at this point, but if I have to go through another withdrawal down the road that will be as bad, maybe I should just give up the gum now. I long for the day when I will just be a non-smoker versus a smoker who is just not smoking. Does that make sense to anyone?

So Sorry about the loss of your mother. I know it has to be one of the most difficult things you will face. The fact that you are doing it without smoking surely testifies that you are a NON-SMOKER. I really want to feel like a non-smoker instead of a smoker who is not smoking. I know from your posts and others that I will get there.

I haven't had any trouble with chocolate, because sweet stuff is not tasting real good right now. The gum, maybe? But I have become addicted to Cheerios. I had them at my house for my granddaughter and grabbed a handful during the first few days of my quit. Since then I keep a bag on my desk at work and the box stays on my kitchen counter at home. Whenever the cravings hit or I feel the need to do something with my hands, I pop a few Cheerios in. Seems to help and I can definitely use the help with my weight and cholesterol.

This weekend I visited the home of one of my friends who smokes. Her and her husband both smoke in their home. They did not smoke around me or in my presence, but since I was there on Saturday, I swear I can taste it. My cravings have jumped way up. On Sunday and yesterday, it felt like I had just had a cigarette and it would be the most normal thing in the world for me to smoke another one. I even wake up with the taste. I had been using the gum, but have cut back to just two a day. I've been brushing my teeth and using mouthwash like crazy. Any other suggestions or has this happened to anyone else?

Hi Mrs. Nick. You will enjoy the support here. Even if you don't post, READ THE POSTS. Alot of the people posting have had the same withdrawals and cravings that you are having. Watch for their helpful hints and if you don't see it, just ask and someone will respond.

Welcome Jim, Anne and Deb!
I can't count the number of times I have tried to quit in the past. I know it's going to work this time because I have this web-site. I think in the past it's been easier to say, "Well, one won't matter"; "Who's going to know". The SSC is not the "no smoking police" but it does seem to make you more accountable to yourself. Use it.
